Week 4

I worked on Tuesday for 3 hours,

20 hours so far,

Wow, it's hard to believe but pretty soon we are going to be coming up on the half way mark. This means that I should be nearing 40 hours, however so far I only worked for half of that. Today I will work another 2 hours at the Novato Charter School in their computer lab, and Damian and I will go in on Thursday to work with Rachel. By the end of this week I will have 25 hours. Therefor I am about 10 hours behind schedule and I will need to make that up somewhere. I might be able to do some of that during spring break, however Rachel will be away, so I would need to do that work from home.

Yesturday when Damian and I went in we spent our time in the computer lab. We started by meeting with Rachel and discussed what we did since we last saw her and then went over our steps. After our meeting Rachel had me look at the "Friends of Urban Forestry" (FUF) website, who have been colaborating with the Teen Environment Media Network TEMN for the past 3 years. TEMN promised FUF that they would do radio shows about them and post them on their website. TEMN has done about 50 shows, however none of them have been uploaded to the web. What Rachel wants me to do is make a top ten of the best radio shows and podcast them. She also wants me to create an achieve of all of their shows, sorted by topic and date. Each story has a transcrip and those need to be uploaded to the site as well. Rachel gave me a list of sites to check out that are similar to what she wants their website to look like. When we meet again with her on Thurday I will talk about those sites and tell her how we might use their design to help us we our site.

Week 3

I worked on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday for a total of 6 hours

17 hours so far,

My mom arrived at 2:30 on Tuesday to pick me up. When I got in the car she told me that Damian was going to go down to San Rafael. When I got home I called Damian's house and his mother told me that she didn't think I needed to go in. When I went in on Thursday I found out from Rachel that she was actually expecting me. Somewhere along the line there was a communication breakdown. Luckily I didn't miss out on anything that was critical to our project and so it was OK. Since Damian was sick on Thursday we both ending up missing one day each this week. Since I've only got 15 hours so far and this is our third week in I am going to need to catch up. Maybe I will do some of this during spring break since we've got the week off of school and as of right now I am not going anywhere.

Yesterday Rachel and I talked about what I am going to do moving forward. On Tuesday, when I missed, Rachel gave Damian a copy of the Inspiration software that we used to create a map of our project. One of our next steps is to begin creating a vision for the new site design. This will involve thinking about how we are going to layout the navigation of the site and Rachel talked to me about Damian and I creating a web map with the Inspiration software.

TEMN (Teen Environment Media Network) also receives grants from organizations. One of these organization is doing an urban forestry planting project and so part of my job will be to help design the pages for this project. Rachel also wants me to begin to organize my binders, so that I will have a place to put things.

Week 2

I worked on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday for a total of 8 hours

11 hours so far,

Since Rachel only works on Tuesdays and Thursdays I can only meet with her once a week on Thursday. The rest of the days I work from home. This week for example I worked on Monday and Friday from home for about 3 hours each day. I was able to keep in contact with Rachel by e-mail and phone. For this time that worked pretty well, however at our meeting on Thursday she said it is rare that she will be able to communicate with me on the days I am working from home. Damian, Rachel, and I have decided that in addition to our weekly meeting that we will try to arrange a phone chat for Tuesdays at 4 to check in.

This week I made progress on drafting a letter to Diane, the host for the TEMN website that Damian and I are working on. I also made a list of my priorities, goals, and objectives for my internship and got some feedback from Rachel. There were a few goals that I missed and I was able to add those goals from Rachel's feedback. Things seam to be moving along and I think Damian and I are making good progress.

Week 1

I worked on Wednesday 10/8 from 2:30-5:30

3 hours so far,

Both Damien and I have our internships with a nonprofit, science educational, organization in downtown San Rafael. We are working a lady named Rachel. We spent most of the time brainstorming the website that we are going to help them create. Their website hasn't been updated for a years, so one of the things we will be doing is yard work. Damien has more skills with graphics and web design, so he will focus on mapping out the site and building pages while I will focus on the media side, turning their radio shows into podcasts. We still need to talk to the tech people, their host, the person who uploads the sites, etc. to figure out what they are doing now. We will also right tutorials so that it will be easy for the person after us to continue our work.

Rachel has set us to work right away. By today we need to send her an e-mail, which lists what needs to be done to reach our priorities objectives. This will include a list of priorities and when we plan to finish each one and how we are planning to meet our objectives by the dates that we set.

This interns seams like it is going to be a lot of work and we will be doing a lot of it from home since Rachel can only meet with us for two hours a week. Hopefully both Damien and I will be able to work from home and communicate with Rachel by e-mail.
