Dear Rachel,
My experience interning at the Teen Environmental Media Network was very positive. The way that you have communicated with both Damian and me has made this internship fun and productive. You did a great job getting us to work right away. I enjoyed getting out the pens and paper and brainstorming what the current website looked like and the changes we wanted to make. This was very useful and also a creative way for us to organize our ideas. The inspiration software was also a useful tool and I am very glad that you showed us how to use it. In fact I even was able to use it for an outline for a school project. Although we have not yet finished our project, I think we have made good progress and I am looking forward to finishing the final product.
Besides this being fun I also have taken many things away from the internship. For example, both Damian and I learned how to draft a business letter, a very important skill in the working world. We also learned how to present our ideas to a client, who may not understand everything we are talking about. This required us to clearly explain our thoughts and ideas. We also learned how to receive feedback and then make changes based on the comments from you and other inters
One of my favorite things of the intern was that we were not just working with adults. We were also working with other interns who shared the same passion as we did. Getting feed back from other teens and discussing ideas with with you and the other inters, made this a very pleasant experience. Damian and I both appreciate your enthusiasm for our project. It always makes you feel good when you know that people appreciate what you are doing. I feel that there is lots of positive feelings about the work that both Damian and I have done and this is something that I am very happy about. I also think it is great that I am getting this opportunity to take a skill that I have and think is cool, and am able to bring this skill to a company and help them with something that they want, but do not have the resources to make. So thank you for creating this positive and fun experience for us and I am looking forward to continue on with this project.

Week 9

I worked 10 hours this week,

for a total of 70.5 hours.

For the final week of my intern I have worked on my WLE pressentation. For my pressentation I will pressent on what I did for my intern. I will talk about how I got the intern and what my goals were when I started. I will also talk about what I acomplished and what I took away from my intern. I will show the podcast page that I have been working on. Since I have not quite finished the project I will work on my own time to finish. I will write a tutoriol for future interns to update the podcast page.

Overall I think that the internship went will. It started off a little bit slow, however as we got in the groove it felt more comfortable. Damian and I were able to use eachother as a first line of defence if we got stuck. I think in the begining we did not really understand exactly what we were suppose to be doing, but as we continued to go in we felt like we were getting the hang of it. This intern was a positive experience for me and I am glad that I had this opportunity.

Week 8

I worked 10 hours this week,

I have worked for a total of 60.5 hours so far,

This week I went to my internship at TEMN twice, once on Tuesday and again on Thursday. On Tuesday Damian and I took a page that we made in Fireworks and uploaded it to the FTP site. At first FTP sounded a bit intimedating, however once we did it once I found it was much easier than I had though. Basically you go the the FTP site, type in a username and password and then drag the files into the write folder. On Wednesday I went to the Novato Charter School and helped them with their Power Points for their 8th grade projects. I had to refresh on Power Point since I haven't used the program for a long time. I wished they had used Keynote, but I didn't want to change programs into their projects. On Thursday I went into TEMN and Rachel and I reviewed how she wants the podcast page to be.

Damian and I am going to pressent our final project on May 18, which is on a Thursday at 4. We will present the old and new site. We will talk about the changes we have made, mabe explain the brainstorm we made on the first day. We will also say what goals we created at the beginning of the intern and then say how we accomplished these tasks. We will also talk about how are intern went, what we learned, and what we took away from it.

Week 7

I worked on Tuesday for 2 hours,

I have worked for a total of 50.5 hours so far,

We are making good progress on the website. Yesturday Damian and I met with Rachel and talked about what the next step is. We discused how we wanted the podcast page to look like. I was able to lay out a page in Fireworks, a graphic layout page. I am going to work with Damian to set up a demo podcast page, so I can miss around with creating a podcast feed and submitting the feed to several podcast directories. I have done some reasearch on podcast media players for websites.

I am also doing a intern at the Novato Charter School. The next time I go in on Wednesday I am going to show the eight graders how to use keynote/powerpoint. I am lookinf forward to this and hoping I can convince them to use keynote, since I really do not like powerpoint. I will begin by asking them what they know and then go from there.

Week 6

I worked on Tuesday for 2 hours,

I have worked for a total of 30.5 hours so far,

Yesturday Rachel met with her other interns and so could not meet with us. Instead Damian and I worked together. He should me the basics of using Fireworks and Dreamweaver. We created a very simple site with a title, links, a sidebar, and the main content. We used Fireworks to lay out the website and then copied it over to Dreamweaver. Both Damian and I are new to the software, however Damian knows a little bit more than I do, so he taught me what he learned. The next step in our project is to begin working on the webpages that we have mapped out. We need to talk to Rachel to find out exactly what she wants. I also need to begin thinking about what I am going to do for my project. Although we have not done much on chaning the website, I could show some of the maps we have created, talk about the sites I researched, maybe talked about the letters that I and Damian wrote, and maybe if we have done some things on the website I will demo that as well.

Week 5

I worked on Tuesday for 3 hours, Wednesday for 2 hours, and Thursday for 3.5 hours.

28.5 hours so far,

The internship started off a little bit slow, but things have begun to pick up. Yesturday we got on the computers and accessed the ftp website using the user name and password that we were provided. We are going to be able to make our own pages in Dreamweaver and then upload them to the site. For the version of the site that we are updating we need to keep the basic design of the site the same, but we have freedom over the content and the navigation. The media site that we will work on later we have complete control over everthing. I think that both Damian and I are exited about how things are working out.

The next step is to draft an e-mail to Linchi, the graphic designer, so we can get the graphics for the site. We also need to do some research to see what similar websites have done and what works and doesn't work. We will need to decided on what pages go into which categories. We will use Inspiration to map out the new design. We will need to get info on the color scemes, fonts, ect. from Linchi. We will need to assign pictures to the webpages and find out what text we need.

Week 4

I worked on Tuesday for 3 hours,

20 hours so far,

Wow, it's hard to believe but pretty soon we are going to be coming up on the half way mark. This means that I should be nearing 40 hours, however so far I only worked for half of that. Today I will work another 2 hours at the Novato Charter School in their computer lab, and Damian and I will go in on Thursday to work with Rachel. By the end of this week I will have 25 hours. Therefor I am about 10 hours behind schedule and I will need to make that up somewhere. I might be able to do some of that during spring break, however Rachel will be away, so I would need to do that work from home.

Yesturday when Damian and I went in we spent our time in the computer lab. We started by meeting with Rachel and discussed what we did since we last saw her and then went over our steps. After our meeting Rachel had me look at the "Friends of Urban Forestry" (FUF) website, who have been colaborating with the Teen Environment Media Network TEMN for the past 3 years. TEMN promised FUF that they would do radio shows about them and post them on their website. TEMN has done about 50 shows, however none of them have been uploaded to the web. What Rachel wants me to do is make a top ten of the best radio shows and podcast them. She also wants me to create an achieve of all of their shows, sorted by topic and date. Each story has a transcrip and those need to be uploaded to the site as well. Rachel gave me a list of sites to check out that are similar to what she wants their website to look like. When we meet again with her on Thurday I will talk about those sites and tell her how we might use their design to help us we our site.
